Thanks for the inspiration! I will be 50 tomorrow, and I fell in love with being the passenger on a motorcycle almost five years ago. I finally decided to stop waiting for the “right time,” and tomorrow I am taking my knowledge test to get my permit. And I intend to sign up for the MSF Basic RiderCourse as soon as I have that permit in hand. Next skills class is the 31st! So excited. Wish me luck!
Good luck, happy birthday, and welcome to the exciting world of motorcycling Pam! We hope you have a wonderful experience in the class. Be sure to read our Beginner’s Guide section and then cruise through some of our other Reader’s Stories for inspiration.
Recently widowed at 53, I find a whole new life ahead of me. A friend took me on my first ride about a month ago. I fell in love!I subscribed to WRN while researching and now reading your story, I am more determined to take my riding class and get a bike of my own. Thank you for your letter and the responses.
I know what you mean by you wish you had started earlier. I gave myself the challenge of getting my motorcycle licence just before I turned 65. Bought a 1997 Kawasaki Vulcan 500 with low mileage in mint condition and find it is enough for me. No problem keeping up to the guys in my riding group when we are on the expressway. I will be 69 in 3 months.
Congrats! I also took up motorcycling in my early 50s, but it took me three years and 10,400 miles to move up from my Yamaha V Star 250 to my current bike, a 2004 Yamaha V Star 1100 Classic. Recently I visited a Harley-Davidson dealership and sat on the Street 750 which got me interested in a test ride, as I see its potential as urban commuter.Taking the MSF’s Basic RiderCourse is definitely the way to go for a new rider, in my opinion. It still amazes me, nearly 4 years later, how many good habits I’ve retained from taking this class.I wish you many more miles on your Street 750. Enjoy, and ride your own ride. Progress at your own pace.
Looks good. You’ll be on an Electra Glide in no time!
