Schuberth E2 Helmet

The new Schuberth E2 helmet is based on its C5 modular (road) helmet WRN reviews here and is the second generation of the company’s adventure helmet line. More than just an E1 with new colors and graphics, the E2 is a flip-up helmet with upgraded comfort, fit, and features.

Hours of riding with the E2 proves Schuberth’s trusted safety, ventilation, and aerodynamic features. The E2’s updated comfort, construction, and visibility certainly enhance the ride.

Comfort and Fit for Women?

Schuberth motorcycle helmets go through rigorous development, testing, and wind-tunnel refinement making them reliably comfortable and quiet. Over the years, Schuberth has developed C3W, C3 PRO Women, and C4 PRO Women helmets to specifically fit a woman's unique facial structure.

Schuberth now offers helmet fit customization options for all riders with its “individual concept” program, first introduced for the C5. This enables riders with various head shapes, or in the case of many women, a narrower jaw and more prominent cheekbones, to personalize the fit. Replacing the padding with thicker or thinner options for the side, back, and cheek pads customize the fit.

Schuberth provides a number of options to enable the rider to personalize the fit. In my case, the E2 rests on my chin and is a bit loose in the cheeks. Changing to thicker cheek pads helps significantly.

An additional comfort feature is the notable quietness of the E2. The extra lining encircling the neck keeps wind and noise out of the bottom of the helmet. The secure sealed closure of the faceshield enhances this while also helping maintain warmth in cold riding conditions. There is a removable chin curtain, top vents, and additional chin venting to provide plenty of air on hot or strenuous rides.

Available in sizes XS–3XL, the Schuberth E2 helmet is offered in Gloss White, Matte Black, and Glossy Concrete Gray for $799, or six graphic options for $899. Sizing is split between two shell sizes: XS–LG and XL–3XL.

Schuberth E2 Helmet’s New Adjustable Peak

One of the features that differentiates adventure and off-road helmets from on-road versions is the addition of a peak. Schuberth went back to its proprietary wind tunnel when developing the peak for the E2 helmet, minimizing buffeting and vibrations during higher speed riding. Additionally, the removable peak easily adjusts to one of three positions.

The E2’s face shield is also easily removable for off-road riders who prefer to wear goggles. Another great feature of the new peak is that it moves together with the face shield when opening the chinbar. It’s a simple maneuver with a memory function that returns the peak to its prior position after opening and closing the chinbar.

Schuberth modular helmets, including the E2, are tested and certified as full face helmets. The E2 is DOT certified, and features international P/J double homologation. My small size weighs 4.3 pounds.

Safety on the Road or Trail

Not all flip-up or modular helmets are alike. Some don’t contain protective properties or secure attachment of the chinbar. All Schuberth modular helmets include polystyrene protection and a dual metal-clamping locking mechanism in the chinbar. They are tested and certified (DOT and ECE) as full face helmets. And plenty of reflective surfaces are integrated into the E2’s design.

The E2 also includes quick-remove cheek pads to make taking the helmet off easier and safer in the event of an incident. Schuberth’s anti-roll-off safety straps (AROS) secure the helmet, significantly reducing forward rotation of the helmet during an impact.

AROS Anti Roll Off Straps
The anti-roll-off straps add an extra challenge to removing the lining, but velcro closures make it easier. Here, they are removed to show the complete AROS strap system.

Schuberth’s injection-molded face shield gets an optical clarity 1 rating, meaning it’s distortion-free. The E2 comes with a Pinlock visor pre-installed. Similar to a dual-pane storm window, the Pinlock visor creates a sealed double layer which eliminates the build up of fog.

Schuberth E2 helmet sunvisor
Tinted face shields are available separately, but the Schuberth E2 comes with a drop-down sun visor which is easily activated with a lever on the left side of the helmet. Schuberth internal sun visors get great reviews because of their clarity and the fact that they drop very low—well out of the user’s sight line. They are also easily removable for cleaning.

Integrated Communications

For an additional $349, Schuberth offers the SC2, a plug-and-play communication system based on Sena’s 50S. Speakers and antennas are preinstalled in the helmet shell. Updated Mesh 2.0 technology provides a communication network for a limitless number of riders.

Schuberth SC2 comm system
The simple Schuberth SC2 Bluetooth kit consists of a communications unit, microphone, and side controller. The SENA-based system doesn’t include speakers or antennas, because those elements are already pre-installed in the helmet.

Installation is literally a snap since the elements just click right into their corresponding ports in the helmet. The unit itself is just a small box inlaid into the back of the helmet. There is a small micro USB jack to charge the unit and you’re good for up to 12 hours of talk time.

Though it comes at a premium price, Schuberth’s E2 modular adventure helmet’s performance and quality justify the investment for serious riders who value safety, comfort, and versatility.
