Genevieve Schmitt
Genevieve Schmitt is one of the leading experts on the subject of women and motorcycling. Through her articles and speeches, she has inspired thousands of women to ride their own motorcycles. Her company, Solitude Ranch Communications, LLC (SRC), publishes Women Riders Now (WRN), an online magazine about women and motorcycling. Solitude Ranch Communications also develops programs for women riders and consults with powersports companies to help them reach female customers.
In her 20 years working as a journalist in the motorcycle industry,
Genevieve has contributed articles to nearly every motorcycle
publication, including Rider, American Rider,
Powersports Business, Cruising Rider, Easyriders, VQ, Harley-Davidson Enthusiast, Hot Rod
Bikes and Thunder Press. In addition to acting as editor of WRN, Genevieve has been the Women's POV Editor for American Iron magazine since 2005, the largest V-twin motorcycle magazine on US newsstands. She writes a monthly column for American Iron called "The Way I See It," in addition to contributing motorcycle feature articles and product reviews. In recent years, Genevieve has also written monthly columns for Friction Zone and Midwest Motorcyclist, both regional motorcycle consumer magazines, and for Dealernews, a powersports trade publication for which she wrote a column called "Selling to Women." Each of those columns appeared over a two-year period.
Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame Inductee In 2001, Genevieve was inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame for her leadership and journalism work. It was a highlight of her full-time journalism career and her focus on women and motorcycling—which, she realizes now, was only just beginning. Since then, Genevieve has made it her mission to educate the riding and non-riding public about the power and influence of the female motorcyclist and to encourage all women who dream of riding a motorcycle to take the leap.
As a leading spokesperson on the subject of women and motorcycling, Genevieve has been quoted in hundreds of newspapers and magazines over the last decade, including the New York Times, USA Today, the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, the Dallas Morning News, Businessweek and Jane magazine. She has also appeared on the Fox News Channel on "Geraldo At Large" for a segment about women riders.
Genevieve speaks at women-focused motorcycling events around the country, including conferences, rallies, ladies' nights and dealer open houses. Her speeches are designed to inspire women to take up motorcycling for the first time and to encourage experienced riders to spend more time in the saddle by creating new riding goals. A little-known fact about Genevieve: She was the first female reporter to ride a motorcycle on television and the first woman to report about the motorcycling lifestyle on television. Both milestones occurred while she was working for the Speedvision cable network (now Speed Channel) from 1997–2003 on the show "Bike Week." She also rode around on an ATV while reporting for "ATV Magazine Television," a show that aired on the Outdoor Life Network from 2002–2005.
Genevieve was nominated for an Emmy for her work as a news magazine TV producer on E! Entertainment Television. In the early 1990s, she also worked as a full-time producer for ABC's Good Morning America and for the syndicated news magazine show EXTRA. Genevieve has been riding a motorcycle since 1990 and currently owns a 1994 Harley-Davidson Dyna Low Rider and a 2008 Harley-Davidson Street Glide.
