June 20 marks the 20th annual worldwide Motorcycle and Scooter Ride to Work Day, and it#8217;s expected to be one of the largest ever. With gas prices rising and roadways increasingly clogged, more motorists are using motorcycles as an economical, efficient and fun way to get to work.
More than 80 million cars and light trucks are used for daily commuting in the United States, but only 200,000 motorcycles and scooters are a regular part of this mix#8212;a small number considering the many positive aspects of commuting on two wheels instead of four. Studies have shown that across equal distances, commuting motorcyclists reach their destinations in less time than those using automobiles. Motorcycles and scooters also consume fewer resources per mile, and they take up less space on the road.
This years official Ride to Work Day logo is available on a wide variety of merchandise, including mugs, buttons and bumper stickers.
On Ride to Work Day, the practical side of riding becomes more visible as a large percentage of the country#8217;s eight million motorcycles and scooters take to the roads during the daily commute. The larger number of bikes helps demonstrate how these vehicles improve traffic flow and make parking easier.
The event has the added benefit of advocating for improved employer recognition and support for two-wheeled forms of transportation, not to mention bringing more public and government awareness to the positive value of riding. And U.S. riders aren#8217;t the only ones taking part in the fun#8212;Canada, Germany, England, France, the Philippines, Israel, Turkey and Ecuador are among the other affiliated Ride to Work Day countries.
