A modern off-road bike that’s great for beginners

2025 NIU XQi3 Electric Motorcycles

The NIU XQi3 is a lightweight electric bike that sits at the intersection of dirt bike and e-mountain bike (eMTB), designed to handle both city commutes and off-road adventures. It comes in two distinct versions. The Street model comes equipped for legal road use. The more rugged, trail-focused Wild version offers increased performance for riders who want to explore off the pavement. Whether you're looking for a daily ride or a weekend trail machine, the XQi3 offers flexibility for different riding styles and skill levels. We test the Wild version.

Chinese scooter manufacturer, NIU, is introducing the XQi3 Street and Wild (off-road) eMotorcycles. The Street version is DOT-approved and comes equipped with mirrors, turn signals, and other necessary gear to make it road-legal. For off-road enthusiasts, the Wild version is stripped down and tuned for performance where pavement ends.

The Wild version packs more power out of the box and offers a more aggressive ride feel, making it ideal for trails, forest roads, and technical terrain. It lacks the safety equipment and speed restrictions of the Street model, giving riders a more responsive throttle and better climbing ability—especially after the latest power-boosting firmware update.

For new riders wanting to learn off-road without the complications of a clutch or full-size dirt bike, the Wild version is a confidence-building platform.

seat height NIU ebike
The XQi3 Wild has a 34-inch seat height, which is tall, but standard for off-road motorcycles. However, it is very narrow which makes it easier to get a solid “toe-plant.” (I’m 5-feet-4 inches tall.) Since the Wild is so light, it’s still incredibly easy to maneuver in spite of the seat height.

This picture illustrates the size difference between the XQi3 Wild and my standard dirt bike, a 2014 KTM 350-EXC-F. The Wild has a smaller, more compact frame and motor. This paired with smaller (19-inch) wheels makes it a light, low, easy-to-ride option for those looking to try out off-road riding.

Moto Meets Mountain Bike—Design and Components

What makes the NIU XQi3 Wild so approachable—especially for new or curious off-road riders—is its blend of mountain bike agility and motorcycle power. With a lightweight aluminum frame and a total weight of just 167.5 pounds, the Wild version feels far less intimidating than a full-size dirt bike. It’s easy to handle at low speeds, simple to pick up after a drop, and nimble enough to thread through tight single track or uneven terrain without feeling bulky.

ebike
The XQi3 borrows from the mountain bike playbook with its geometry, riding stance, and the components. And there is no pedaling.

Featuring adjustable KKE components front and rear, the suspension is more rugged than what you'd find on a typical eMTB, with the ability to fine-tune rebound and compression. While it doesn’t offer the travel or toughness of full motocross suspension, it performs well for moderate off-road use, particularly for lighter riders or those still building confidence on the trails.

The braking system follows a similar philosophy. With 220mm front and 203mm rear hydraulic disc brakes, the stopping power is noticeably stronger than what you’d expect from a standard mountain bike. However, the overall style and caliper design feels closer to high-performance electric bicycles than traditional dirt bikes. This makes for a responsive yet familiar braking feel—especially useful for riders transitioning from pedal bikes to powered two-wheelers.

Ride Modes on the XQi3 Wild

The NIU XQi3 Wild features multiple ride modes that let riders tailor the bike’s performance to their comfort level and terrain:

Eco Mode: Prioritizes range and smooth acceleration. Ideal for beginners or casual cruising when you want to conserve battery or ease into the bike’s handling.

Dynamic Mode: A balanced setting that offers more responsive acceleration while still maintaining control. Great for trail riding or everyday adventures when you want a bit more zip without going full send.

Boost Mode: Unlocks the bike’s full power potential—up to 10.6 kW with the latest OTA update. This mode delivers fast acceleration and is perfect for steep climbs, technical sections, or when you just want to feel the full thrill of the ride.

The XQi3 Wild’s ride modes are selectable via the onboard display or NIU app. Riders can easily switch between mellow and aggressive performance depending on where—and how—they ride.

Trail Performance and Ride Feel

Under the seat, the XQi3 packs a removable 72V LG lithium-ion battery, powering an electric motor that now pushes out up to 10.6 kW of peak power, thanks to a recent firmware update. On the trail this means more snap and more torque—whether you're climbing rocky switchbacks or zipping through open stretches.

ebike handlebars NIU
With no clutch or gear shifting to worry about, the XQi3 offers a “twist and go” experience like on a motorcycle or scooter with an automatic transmission. Just like on a motorcycle, the right hand lever activates the front brake. The left side lever is for the rear brake (there is no brake pedal.) This can take a while for experienced motorcycle riders to get used to, and I find myself skidding the rear wheel at times when I forget and instinctively try to activate a clutch.

Plug and Ride: Charging the XQi3 Wild is as Easy

A removable external charging unit plugs directly into a port hidden beneath the seat, which is secured with a small quick-release latch for easy access—no tools needed. There are no keys to the XQi3 Wild. Just below the triple clamp there is a chip reader that the rider just holds a chip or card up to to turn the bike on.

Charging the NIU XQi3 Wild is refreshingly simple—no special outlets or garage setup required. The bike uses a standard household plug (110V in the U.S.), so you can charge it from any regular wall outlet. Just pop the seat off, connect the charger, and plug into the wall. The charging process takes about 5 to 6 hours for a full charge from empty using the stock charger.

The external charger itself is heavy, but portable for on-the-go top-ups. The removable battery also means you can take the battery inside to charge if outdoor outlets aren’t an option. Overall, charging the XQi3 is convenient—no complex setup or confusing process—just plug in and ride.

WRN Recommendation

The NIU XQi3 Wild is a fun, modern two-wheeled option that sits right between an electric mountain bike and a true off-road motorcycle. It’s approachable for beginners, yet still delivers the performance (and fun) intermediate riders want. With clean, quiet power, trail-friendly handling, and low-maintenance design, it’s an ideal choice if you can make it work with the limitations of range and charging.

NIU electric dirt bike
While it’s not a full-sized dirt bike, the XQi3 Wild is surprisingly capable. It is a blast zipping around on it, and the bike handles technical terrain better than anticipated. For riders looking to get dirty without diving straight into high-performance dirt bikes, this bike strikes a great balance between ease and excitement.
